What made a Florida man stab a gas station clerk?

A Florida man is facing some serious charges after stabbing a gas station clerk during an altercation.

Billy Joe Martin is facing attempted murder charges and more after going into a gas station and attempting to steal a can of beer.  Allegedly Martin entered the gas station, went to the fridge and put a can in his pocket.

It was reported that when the gas station clerk asked him about it, Martin became aggressive, approached the employee behind the glass and began hitting and stabbing the employee. Where he then grabbed a pack of cigarettes.

The employee was able to fight Martin off and lock the doors to keep him inside until the police showed up.  Officers had to taze Martin before bringing him into custody.  Once in the police car Martin began slamming head against the window, spitting, swearing, and dropping racial slurs.

The clerk suffered multiple stab wounds and was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and expected to survive.
