Northeastern University Sends Out Erroneous Acceptance Letters
Northeastern University experienced an unfortunate mishap over the weekend that left dozens of prospective students quite disappointed. NBC Boston reported that Northeastern sent out erroneous acceptance letters due to a technical glitch. Unfortunately, this has happened before with the school.
In total, 48 students applying to Northeastern’s graduate school received notification that they were accepted. The thrill suddenly turned to disappointment, unfortunately. “Due to a technical error, 48 individuals out of nearly 64,000 applicants for master’s degree programs received an erroneous email of acceptance. They were immediately contacted by the university to clarify the mistake,” the university said in a statement.
The good news here is that all is not lost. The applicants were not in the rejection bucket. They are currently under review. A decision is supposed to be made and delivered in January of 2024.
The First Time This Happened
A little over a year ago, in October of 2022, a similar circumstance occurred with Northeastern. At that time, approximately 200 people were erroneously notified they had been accepted into the school’s law program. This was out of 4,000 applicants. This was due to a technical error and glitch that occurred within the administrative office. Boston.com reported late last year that some of the 2022 accidental acceptance letters included “Northeastern ID number, a merit scholarship, and two requirements — she must rescind all other law school applications and pay a $500 enrollment deposit.”
This year, though the number of hopeful grad students that were on the wrong side of the accidental email was lower than last year, they still had to be notified that the acceptance letter was not valid. Boston.com explained, “More than 20,000 graduate students are enrolled at Northeastern, including in its law, engineering, and business graduate programs.” Northeastern’s master’s degree program receives around 64,000 applicants. The university has approximately 7,700 students in its grad school and master’s programs.
