Las Vegas Food Hall ‘The Sundry’ Shutters Doors Suddenly After 1 Year
The Sundry Food Hall Las Vegas threw in the towel after one year of operating in the UnCommons, a commercial plaza in the Southwest region of the city.
Yesterday, Eater Vegas reported on the closure of Mizunara, a sushi handroll restaurant inside of The Sundry food hall. Today, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Eater Vegas both reported on the closure of the entire food hall. The food hall’s last day will be Saturday, June 22.
The food officially opened in June of last year, according to our previous reporting.
When the food hall first opened, there were two full-service restaurants B.S. Taqueria and Mizunara. There was an Italian place, a Greek eatery, a fried chicken spot, and an Indian portion within the food hall.
Over time, the food hall seemed to slowly be stripped. Soul Belly also tried a shot at the food hall. The website currently lists Mabel’s fried chicken, Easy Sliders, Messina Italian Kitchen, DEO Mediterranean, and Calle Street Tacos as the only restaurants in the food hall.
The Sundry, Other Food Halls Around Country Also Closing
The Block Food Hall located in Bethesda, Maryland closed in April of this year, as reported by Montgomery County-based podcast the Moco Show.
A food hall in Colorado Springs announced its closure last week, according to the local Fox affiliate in Colorado. And another food hall in Orlando closed after facing a lawsuit about rental payments, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
It seems that the lucrative nature of food halls may be halted by large operational costs.
Retail Wire reports about “food hall fatigue,” which means people are not enamored by food halls anymore.
Like most dining concepts, the idea becomes repeated so much that it loses its “special sparkle.” Now, nearly every Las Vegas casino has some type of food hall.
“For food halls to succeed, they need to be round-the-clock operations, with nighttime programming and a bar scene,” Phil Colicchio, executive managing director at Cushman & Wakefield’s Colicchio Consulting Group, said to the Wall Street Journal.
