The 2024 WSOP Main Event Champion Teaches A Valuable Lesson
Congratulations to Jonathan Tamayo, the 2024 WSOP main event champion. Jonathan beat out a record-breaking field of hopefuls, optimist and dreamers to become the WSOP Main Event Champion.
2024 WSOP Main Event Champion Folds And Wins
Jonathan is known in the poker world as one of the best to play the game. He is smart, methodical, and a little bit lucky here and there, and believe me, you need some luck to beat out 10,000 people in a grueling game that is unforgiving.
But Jonathan didn’t become the WSOP Main EVENT Champion because he was lucky. He won because he folded when it mattered.
With 10 players remaining, and one away from the final table and one away from securing a million dollars, minimum, Jonathan was dealt the 3rd best hand in poker, pocket Queens. However, the big stack, the one with the most chips, raised the pot to 3.2 million. Jonathan had 30 million in chips, so the raise was barely a dent into his stack. Most players in this instance would re-raise and put the pressure on the big stack, but Jonathan opted against that plan and folded. Jonathan folded his hand, because for him, in that situation, it mattered.
And now he is the 2024 WSOP Main Event Champion

And we could all learn that lesson.
Not just in poker, but in life.
For instance, sometimes you are in a terrible relationship. Its toxic and you guys are fighting all the time. It’s emotionally abusive (hopefully not physically) and you know you should just breakup. But the sex is too good. So, you keep going back for more (Poker players understand that analogy all too well). When do you finally just fold your hand and walk away? After you make sure you get one more good “session” in? Not sure that’s the most effective “fold” but, it sounds good.
Or how about when you’re looking for Love on a random Saturday night, and that hot tasty treat across the way at the bar is checking you out. This could be a good night, yet they are also looking a bit unkept and scratching their privates. .Do you really want the Jack as ACDC puts it?
And it’s not just love or lust relationships that can deal you a bad beat. Talking about politics at the dinner table with family can be a disastrous play as well. There’s absolutely nothing to win in that situation. Bottom line, folding that losing hand can make you a Main Event Champion at home, every day.
In the end, Jonathan Tamayo is an amazing poker player. A player who teaches so many how to play an incredibly grueling and complicated game. But On July 18th 2024, Jonathan Tamayo taught us the most important lesson of all, “You got know when to fold em”
But then again, hasn’t Kenny Rogers been saying that forever?
