Bruce Springsteen is mourning the loss of his mother, Adele, who died on Jan. 31 at age 98.
Springsteen shared his tribute via social media. Included in his post is a video of The Boss dancing with his mother to the Glenn Miller classic "In the Mood." When the mother and son finish dancing, Bruce can be heard saying, "Beautiful, mom, beautiful!"
Springsteen captioned the video with two verses from his song "The Wish."
"I remember in the morning, mom, hearing your alarm clock ring
I’d lie in bed and listen to you getting ready for work
The sound of your makeup case on the sink
And the ladies at the office all lipstick, perfume and rustling skirts
How proud and happy you always looked walking home from work
It ain’t no phone call on Sunday, flowers or a Mother’s Day card
It ain’t no house on the hill with a garden and a nice little yard
I’ve got my hot rod down on Bond Street I’m older but you’ll know me in a glance
We’ll find us a little rock ‘n roll bar and we’ll go out and dance"
The track was featured on the 1998 box set Tracks. The box set features various unreleased outtakes from recording sessions from many of Springsteen's previously released albums. Featured on disc three of the four-disc boxset is "The Wish," which was an outtake from 1987's Tunnel of Love.
The Love Bruce Had for His Mother
Bruce undoubtedly loved his mother and was always appreciative of everything she did for him. When he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, the first person he thanked in his acceptance speech was her. He recalled a particular Christmas Eve when the two of them were standing outside of a music store. Bruce said he pointed to a Sunburst guitar in the window and told her, "I need that one, Ma." Adele Springsteen got her son that guitar for $60.
She got me what I needed, and she protected me and provided for me on a thousand other days and nights," said Bruce. "As importantly, she gave me a sense of work as something that was joyous and that filled you with pride and self-regard, and that committed you to your world. Thanks, Mom. This is yours tonight. Take it home as a small return on the investment you made in your son."
Bruce Springsteen is one of the most prolific songwriters in music history. Here are his top 50 songs ranked.
