Joni Mitchell Performs at the Grammys for the First Time
Joni Mitchell made history when she took to the stage Sunday night (Feb. 4) at the 2024 Grammy Awards. It marked the first time the iconic singer-songwriter performed at the ceremony in her legendary career.
Mitchell performed the classic “Both Sides, Now” from her 1969 album Clouds. She was backed by Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, Jacob Collier, Lucius, Sista Strings and Blake Mills.

Carlile pulled double duty and introduced Mitchell’s performance. She said, in part, (as transcribed by Variety), “Whether we know it or not, any one of us out here who ever dreamed of becoming a truly self-revealing singer-songwriter did it standing on the shoulders of one Joni Mitchell … She redefined the very purpose of a song to reflect the contents of a person’s soul.”
Mitchell’s Grammy Win
During the Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony, Mitchell won the Grammy for Best Folk Album for her 2023 live album, Joni Mitchell At Newport. This is Mitchell’s 10th Grammy Award win.
She said, in part, “I don’t know what to say about this. We had so much fun at that concert, and I think that you can feel it on the record. You know, it’s a very joyous record because of the people that I played with … even the audience sounds like music.”
Mitchell has been on a long road to being able to perform again. Back in 2015, she suffered an aneurysm. As The New York Times reported in June 2015, Mitchell was able to speak following her aneurysm, but she required physical therapy to be able to walk again. While she utilizes a wheelchair, she uses a cane when she walks.
In the days leading up to her historic performance, Mitchell announced an October 19 show at the Hollywood Bowl. Due to popular demand, a second show on October 20 was added.
