There are so many food trends surfacing up. There's been the viral “Oatzempic” and the Scallion Latte craze, to name two. Recently, social media has been losing it over hot dog-water-inspired cocktails. Now, some people on social media are trying their hand at the “fluffy Coke” trend.
What is Fluffy Coke?
People are coating the inside of a glass with marshmallow fluff, scooping in ice cubes, and pouring in Coca-Cola or alternatively their favorite fizzy beverage. The result is said to make for a creamy and rich drink, similar to a root beer float. But some creators add their own twist to the recipe like adding syrup or candy.
The origin of the sweet soda remains somewhat unclear, but one of the most popular clips featuring it is from user Emma Grace (@not.eg) on TikTok, where she showcases it with her Memama. This video, posted on July 6, has gained nearly 300,000 likes. Another video, shared earlier on June 28 by Twisters Soda Bar in Pendleton, Indiana, also demonstrates how they prepare the fluff-filled beverage.
This drink has similarities to the dirty soda trend that exploded on TikTok in 2022. Dirty soda generally combines soda with creamer or half-and-half, flavored syrups, and lime juice. Although it was new to many social media users at that time, dirty sodas have been popular in many states like Utah since the 2010s.
The latest trend actually has Chrissy Teigen’s seal of approval. In an Instagram post, Teigen cracked her usual jokes. “I came across this fluffy Coke trend the other day when I was neglecting my kids and as a lover of soda, I thought, ‘F--- it, why not,’” she said.
Teigen shared her frustrations about TikTok users misinterpreting the trend.
“Now I did notice that some people did not know the difference between marshmallow fluff and marshmallow cream and since I am a trained scientist let me show you,” she said, demonstrating the difference with two jars. “Marshmallow Fluff is fluffy and marshmallow cream is creamy.”
After opting to stick to the drink’s name and use Marshmallow Fluff, she shows how she coats her glass with “enough Fluff to kill a man.”
She then introduced an extra step not found in all other recipes. She added a few pumps of vanilla-flavored syrup to her glass, saying, “We are all going to die anyhow.”
When it was time to add her ice cubes, she selected pebble-shaped ice but said, “Feel free to use the $70 kind from Erewhon.”
She then chose Dr. Pepper over Coca-Cola and allowed it to sit for a few minutes so the soda could blend with the fluff.
“And yeah, of course, it was f---ing great. It’s literally marshmallow, vanilla and soda. If you don’t like it, you’re nuts,” she said at the end of the clip while excitedly sipping away at the fluffy Coke concoction. In the caption, she reemphasized her enthusiasm for the drink and wrote, “OF COURSE IT WAS GOOD”
