Disney Is Closing Splash Mountain For Good
It really is the end of an era, in more ways than one. Disney just announced they are closing their Splash Mountain ride. It is an indefinite goodbye for the fan favorite log flume coaster. But not a permanent close for the attraction itself. The company plans to make it over, again.
For those of us old enough to remember, Disney introduced the ride as Zip-a-Dee River Run in 1983. It was themed after the Song of The South movie. A year later it was renamed to Splash Mountain to help promote another Disney movie: Splash with Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah.
The newest makeover was announced back in 2020. After years of complaints that the ride still had racist overtones, in spite of the name being changed back in 1984. The latest incarnation will be based on the Disney animated movie The Princess & The Frog. The new ride will be called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. It is scheduled to open in 2024 at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.
Fans everywhere are rushing to the Disney theme parks to get their last goodbyes in with Splash Mountain. Others are just trying to get some water fun under the belt before the ride closes for the year. It has already closed at Magic Kingdom. The closing date for Disneyland in California hasn’t been announced yet, but it probably won’t be long.
Other fans are looking to profit on this change by selling water from the ride. On EBay, people are making up to $1000 for a single jar of what they claim is Splash Mountain water (cbsnews.com). The listings show a picture of the water in front of the Splash Mountain ride. The listings also claim the water was grabbed on the last day of the ride before it closed in Magic Kingdom. So you can probably look for similar mayhem in Anaheim in the next few weeks.
