Peter Frampton Says He Was Duped into Being in ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ Film
Peter Frampton was one of the unfortunate souls in the universally panned 1978 film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. However, the guitar icon claims he was duped into the project.
Frampton touched on the film in a recent appearance on The Bob Lefsetz Podcast. He says producer Robert Stigwood told him Paul McCartney was going to be in the film. Hearing that, Frampton said he was in. Unfortunately, once he arrived in Los Angeles for the first meeting about the film, he learned McCartney wasn’t on board after all and said he was lied to.
Frampton then noted, “I realized from the first day of shooting, ‘Oh, this was a disaster.’ I didn’t walk because I would have been sued to high hell, but we all hated being in that movie.”
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has an audience score of 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. As for the critic’s TomatoMeter, it received a score of 11%.
The reviews are nothing short of brutally poetic. Variety wrote,”‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ will attract some grown-up flower children of the 1960s who will soon find the Michael Schultz film to be a totally bubblegum and cotton candy melange of garish fantasy and narcissism.” The New York Times wrote, “This isn’t a movie, it’s a business deal set to music.” The Washington Post was actually sort of nice writing, ” … The movie’s fun in a wholesome, innocent kind of way, and there are worse fates than having to look at Peter Frampton for two hours.”
Frampton and the Rock Hall
Earlier this month, it was announced that Frampton was one of 15 nominees for the 2024 induction class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Despite being eligible since 1997, 2024 marks Frampton’s first Rock Hall nomination. The guitarist candidly told Billboard he was in the bathroom when he learned of his nomination and let out a scream. Frampton said his band leader Rob Arthur came running once he heard him scream.
“He thought something was wrong,” said Frampton. “So, anyway, it was a very good day.”
