Jury Duty Scam Targeting Las Vegas Residents
Look out for a trending jury duty scam that’s currently targeting residents of Las Vegas. If it happens to you, don’t fall for it!
This has reportedly happened to several people in the Las Vegas Metro and the call might sound legitimate and frightening–but you have to be aware that it’s happening. There are many scams out there and people looking to take your money and you don’t want to be the next victim of this jury duty scam.
How Does The Jury Duty Scam Work?
According to KTNV, the jury duty scam involves someone threatening you on a phone call saying you might be arrested for failing to show up for jury duty and it’s been reported many times across Clark County recently. In fact, it’s become such a big problem that the Sheriff’s Civil Bureau for Las Vegas Metropolitical Police had to record a message to callers saying, “If you have received a phone call reference missing jury duty, license suspension or a citation, be advised this is a scam. The police will not contact you reference these matters and will never take money,” via KTNV.
To make the call sound legit, these scammers seen to be pretending to be officers and even give a name and badge number. They will even name real local judges and accuse you of wrongdoing. In the calls, they give the address of the Sheriff’s Civil Bureau on Clark Street and say they have to go there immediately. Then, the scammer asks what they’ll be driving and what time they expect to arrive, and even ask about what route they’ll be taking to get there. None of those are normal questions and should be an instant tell that something is not right.
Usually, requests for jury duty will be sent via the mail and won’t happen over the phone. By the way, pretending to be law enforcement is illegal!
