Gaming: Is Skill-Based Matchmaking Bad?
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3’s release is right around the corner. Millions of players were able to get some hands-on action after the open beta testing. Lots of fun, rage, and try-harding ensued , but one debated topic kept popping up. Is the skill-based matchmaking system good or bad?
What Is Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM)?
SBMM is the algorithm that attempts to place players against others that are around their same skill level. This means that the majority of your games should be nail bitingly close. If it functions as intended, SBMM should make matches more enjoyable for players of all skill levels. It would allow everyone to experience high octane gameplay. However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The system can also be a major detriment to above average and highly skilled players.
Is (SBMM) Worth It Or Not?
One argument against SBMM is that a game’s meta can possibly ruin the gaming experience that the algorithm is trying to create. The meta, the most effective tactics available, can turn your average joe into an above average player. Above average players, not following the meta, can end up feeling forced into playing meta builds when they get outgunned by someone that is less skilled then them. This can create an upward trickling effect with everyone changing to meta builds just to beat people worse than them. On the other hand, SBMM can really aid below average players by giving them a great environment to build up their skills. No one enjoys being utterly crushed by someone all game just to finish the match having learned nothing.
Another possible drawback to SBMM is that, once your skill rating is high enough, it may take longer to find players for your matches. If there aren’t enough players in your skill level that are nearby, a larger search area is needed. This also means that your ping, the time it takes for data to travel from your device to a server and back, will be higher. This can mean, the better you are, the longer your wait time between matches AND a worse connection in game.
Your Thoughts On (SBMM)
Everyone loves the feeling of winning. A well deserved win can get your blood pumping, adrenaline flowing, and dopamine rushing to your brain. But what are your thoughts on skill-based matchmaking? Is it great for everyone? Does it need more improvements? If so, what kinds? Or should it be removed entirely with every team’s skill balance left to the RNG gods?
