Las Vegas Monorail Almost Taken Out By Vegas Loop: Report
When the Vegas Loop was announced, it was supposed to be a big leap forward in public transportation around the Las Vegas tourist areas. It was also the precursor to a long-awaited death knell for the long disappointing Las Vegas Monorail.
Well, death for the monorail almost came early and from below. A new report from Fortune claims that Clark County cited The Boring Company, the Elon Musk-owned tunnel digging entity behind the Vegas Loop, for exposing pillars that hold up the monorail track. In one instance, it stopped service on the Las Vegas Monorail over two days.
Las Vegas Monorail Passengers Were At Risk
It was a serious situation according to a former The Boring Company employee who spoke to the publication, saying anyone on the monorail during the incident was put at risk. Thankfully, few do.
There have been many claims of a lack of care in and around creation of the Vegas Loop. Nevada OSHA has cited the project for safety violations in the past, resulting in pretty significant fines.
Vegas Loop Is Expanding In Ways The Las Vegas Monorail Wishes
When the Las Vegas Monorail was announced, there were some lofty future “phases” that were bandied about. An extension to the airport and towards Downtown Las Vegas being among them. But not much came to fruition. There is even a possibility of a stop at the Sphere, but there have been no concrete plans.
Meanwhile the proposed Vegas Loop system gets bigger and bigger, spreading its tentacles as far north as Downtown Las Vegas, as far south as the planned NBA-ready arena at Las Vegas Boulevard and Blue Diamond, and also reaching to Harry Reid International Airport and even Spring Mountain Road towards Chinatown.
Obviously these are all plans and hopes and dreams. But one thing is for sure. If it comes even close to accomplishing the route they plan, the Vegas Loop shutting down the Las Vegas Monorail from below was foreshadowing more than anything.
