Cybercrime In Nevada Ranks Highest In The Country For 2023
Las Vegas, Nevada. The Entertainment Capital of the World. Ranked number one in the nation for most popular vacation spots. Even ahead of New York, Miami and surprisingly, Hawaii, ktnv.com reported. Feels good to be number one, doesn’t it? Guess what else we are number one in? Cybercrime. Yes, cybercrime in Nevada just took the gold in a race we didn’t want to be in.
Las Vegas is also number one when it comes to being the most stressful city, reviewjournal.com reported. Might have something to do with money issues (let’s move on).
Cybercrime In Nevada Shown To Be Highest In U.S.
Back to our number one spot on the cybercrime podium. According to The FBI’s Internet Crime Report, Nevada loses more money to cyber hackers, per capita, than anyone else in the United States. Gosh, I wonder why. Would it have something to do with us being as obsessed as the rest of the world with Tik Tok? Nah. Or because our gas pumps have tiny little cameras stealing our credit card number? Nah.
Oh I know, how about The Def Con Convention held in Las Vegas every year???
According to gogather.com, Las Vegas is also the number one city to host a convention in. And Def Con, per politico.com is the number one hacker’s convention in the world. You know, where a bunch of savvy computer pirates come to town and (possibly) hack EVERYTHING around them, and it’s welcomed by our city with open arms?

When I first heard about Def Con being here, I was floored. How in the world can we allow that? And not just allow it. But roll out the red carpet for these guys. The answer, of course, is because of the almighty dollar. Def Con brings a ton of cash into the city. Like any convention, really. Except, other conventions don’t have the manpower and know-how to hack into anyone and everyone’s bank account.
And look, I’m not saying the Def Con hackers do, I have zero proof. However, is it coincidence that Nevada, a less-populated state than, say California (which came in at number two on the FBI list of Cybercrime), has their people ripped off more, per capita, than anyone else? The state of Nevada loses more than 6.2 million bucks per 100,000 residents, the FBI report shows.
Think about it, Nevada’s population is just over 3.2 million, according to worldpopulationreview.com. And World Population Review shows that California is almost 39 million. And yet we get bamboozled more than anyone? It doesn’t add up.
Vegas Locals Feeling The Cybercrime In Nevada
According to 2023 FBI Annual Report, cybercrime in Nevada last year saw 7,198 locals become victims. With an average monetary loss of $27,897.83.I have personally been hacked more than once. Also, for a long time, my phone kept giving me locations in Phoenix, as if I lived there. And it happened right after the Def Con folks were here. Trust me, I was keenly aware of their presence in the city at the time. It stressed me out.
In fact, it kind of freaks me out to even be talking about…those guys…almost feels like they might hone in on my use of their name. And next thing you know, my credit card company will be asking why I just bought some time share in Arizona.
