Best One-Hit Wonders Of The Early 2000’s
Who doesn’t love a good one-hit wonder? There are some from every era and decade but I feel like some of the best were from the early 2000s and I am biased because those were some of the best years of my life when I was in high school! These are some of my favorite tracks that might have come from artists who didn’t stick around for more but their songs sure did! Here are my five early 2000s one-hit wonders that still slap:
1. “Teenage Dirtbag” – Wheatus (2000)
Nothing screams early 2000s angst like Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag.” This song brings out the true awkwardness of high school crushes and all of the outsider vibes, all wrapped up in a catchy pop-rock anthem and punk/pop-rock was my everything in high school! Put it on, and you’re instantly transported to the days of mixtapes and baggy jeans.
2. “Stacy’s Mom” – Fountains of Wayne (2003)
The song that launched a thousand crushes! “Stacy’s Mom” was hilarious, and a little scandalous, which is probably why it’s still so iconic. If I shut my eyes when it’s on I can still see the music video for it!
3. “Crazy” – Gnarls Barkley (2006)
Core memories for me right here. Gnarls Barkley hit us with a masterpiece with this one. CeeLo Green’s vocals and Danger Mouse’s production really made this!! It’s one of the coolest tracks of the decade and it still holds up every time it’s played.
4. “Absolutely (Story of a Girl)” – Nine Days (2000)
Another pop-rock track for the list. This one about a girl who “cried a river and drowned the whole world” dominated the radio and Napster (remember Napster) for a bit. It’s the kind of song that instantly brings a smile to your face.
5. “Butterfly” – Crazy Town (2001)
“Come my lady, come come my lady…” Admit it, you know the lyrics to “Butterfly” by heart. This rap-rock fusion was everywhere in 2001, and despite Crazy Town fading away, this track is still a banger.
These one-hit wonders may not have led to long-lasting careers for their artists, but they’re forever attached to so many good times for me. Early 2000’s one-hit wonders still slap today!
