Nevada State Park Ranger Kills Person At Valley Of Fire State Park
One person is dead after a Nevada State Park Ranger allegedly shot and killed someone on Wednesday, according to 8 News Now.
An official statement from the Valley of Fire State Park said that on Wednesday afternoon, a park ranger stationed at the Valley of Fire State Park was responding to a call. While responding to the call, the ranger discharged their weapon, and “one subject was struck.”
The ranger was not hurt, a news release states. Medical officials responded to the scene and pronounced the person — who was shot — dead. 8 News Now further reports that the ranger is on paid administrative leave.
Shooting At Valley of Fire State Park
The investigation is still active, and the Nevada Division of State Parks has not provided further updates about this incident.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation. Valley of Fire State Park remains closed to visitors. No other additional details will be provided at this time,” according to a 2 p.m. update from the Valley of Fire State Park.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the park remained closed. Only people with camping reservations were allowed to enter the park through the West Entrance. Officials closed the remaining areas of the park.
On Thursday evening, the park announced that it would return to normal operating hours on Friday.
First Fatal Officer-Involved Incident At Valley of Fire State Park
According to KTNV (Channel 13), this officer-involved shooting is the Nevada Division of State Park’s first one that resulted in death.
There have been other fatalities at the Valley of Fire State Park. Last year, two hikers were found dead after speculating that the hikers ran out of water and “succumbed to the heat.”
According to previous reporting, the two hikers were hiking on Prospect Trail when temperatures reached 118 degrees.
“Jessica Rhodes, 34, and Diana Matienzo Rivera, 29, both of Las Vegas, were identified by the Clark County coroner’s office Tuesday as the women found dead at the park on Saturday,”
