SNHD Warns West Nile Virus-Carrying Mosquitos In Las Vegas
Summer means gorgeous days, hanging in the pool, drinking margaritas and contracting the virus of West Nile in Las Vegas?
Wait! What? How?
According to News 3, the Southern Nevada Health District has detected West Nile Virus in Clark County. They’re even releasing a safety campaign because, well kids, this isn’t a drill.
Recently the SNHD also released a statement that said the district’s Mosquito Disease Surveillance Program trapped and identified mosquitos infected with the West Nile Virus in Las Vegas.
“In addition to identifying mosquitoes that commonly carry West Nile Virus, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known carriers of Zika, dengue, and chikungunya,” the press releases said.
Are you kidding me? West Nile in Las Vegas? Here? Because of Mosquitos?
Mosquitos Suck, Literally: West Nile In Las Vegas Means You Need To Take Precautions
When did we start getting little blood sucking, disease spreading d***heads anyways? I thought they only rampaged humid climates? Isn’t living in the dry desert of Las Vegas like living in an oven with a fan during summer? Isn’t that the best flying-insect repellant ever? Look, I live in Vegas to avoid those little buttholes, and now they are HERE and giving us the gift of the West Nile Virus?
This, just like summers in Las Vegas, isn’t cool at all.
Apparently, according to News 3, this is happening mostly in the north part of town. Craig Ranch Regional Park has seen an increase in bugs, and residents in North Las Vegas said they already have these flying demons for quite sometime now.

This is distressing news. Isn’t it bad enough that we are about to try and survive the apocalyptic return of cicadas. And not just the normal onslaught because according to Fox 5 , we can expect record-breaking, horrifying amounts. In fact, experts say for the first time in centuries, billions, with a B, of cicadas will take to the air this summer.
However, as annoying and strange the cicadas are, I’m use to them. They make their buzzing sounds all summer but overall leave you alone. Mosquitos on the other hand are something I’m not use to in Vegas. Sure, when I go to Hawaii or humid climates, they feast on me like I’m all-you-can-eat sushi, but in Vegas? Never. So why now?
Well, according to 8 News Now.com, a new type of flying insect is to blame. The Southern Nevada Health District says the “Aedes aegypti mosquito” made its way to the Vegas Valley in 2017 and has grown steadily since. These little monsters carry zika, dengue and some other nasty things I can’t spell. And now they’ve invited their little West Nile Virus-carrying friends.
I’m going to need a lot of alcohol this summer. And bug repellant.
