Most Epic Fails In Radio Stunt History: One Ended In Death
I remember the day of radio wars, the days when we tormented the competition with crude jokes and jaw-dropping stunts. But, there were a few radio stunts/promotions that were just far too extreme and dangerous.
- Win A Divorce
Yes, you read that right. A radio station in New Zealand decided to give away a divorce during Valentine’s Day. According to The Bone Online, the couple would have to break up live, and on-air, and the station would take care of the divorce costs.
Brilliant? Depressing? Maybe both? In Vegas, you can get a divorce annulled in a pretty affordable manner. But in other places, maybe not as much.
Well, the winning couple wasn’t actually getting a divorce and pretty much sabotaged the competition.
2. Drink Urine for Mötley Crüe Tickets
This one comes from a radio station that I know very well. So, I can be the primary source when it comes to this failed promotion.
The year was 1999, and Mötley Crüe was still performing in pretty prime condition. Well, a well-known station decided to conjure up this radio stunt: drink pee for Mötley Crüe tickets. From what I remember, majority of the contestants chickened out. But, one person actually did it.
Well, this radio stunt caused a plethora of controversy and ended up with management canning the DJ.
- Pee for Wii Ends In Death
The last on our list is the most deadly. It quite literally ended in the unfortunate death of a 28-year-old mother of three named Jennifer Strange. According to CBS News, a radio station in California was holding a competition to see who could hold their pee for the longest. The winner would win a new Wii gaming console.
NBC News also reported that “A preliminary investigation found evidence ‘consistent with a water intoxication death,’ said assistant Coroner Ed Smith,” regarding Strange’s unfortunate death.
