Unfrosted. The War That Built Breakfast.
Netflix has just released a movie called “Unfrosted”. It’s a parody of the true story around the invention of Pop Tarts. It also highlights the battle between Kellogg’s and Post. It was the war that built breakfast. I watched it and while Unfrosted had some funny moments, it was mostly super odd and trippy. Jerry Seinfeld, who directed Unfrosted, seems to be doing some extra microdosing or something, because this movie was straight out of a psychedelic mushroom field.
And while the movie itself is full of nonsense, meaning not everything is true in the flick, (although the evil milkman played by Christan Slater was a nice addition), it was a fun adventure into the Kellogg’s vs. Post history.
History? Who knew I was such a fan.
Apparently, as I have grown older, I’ve become more of a history buff, which I find surprising because I always ditched that class in high school. In fact, I’m a fan of the docuseries “The (fill in the blank) That Built America’ that airs on Hulu. They get into the history of everything from The Cars, The Men, The Toys and The Foods that Built America. Seriously, if you are looking for a fun binge, this is for you.

For instance, who knew that a patient in a sanitarium helped invent the pop tart. Well kind of anyways. As the story goes, according to therestless-viking.com, John H Kellogg invented a granola type health food for his patients, while he was working as a doctor in a sanitarium. His brother, W.K. Kellogg also worked at the sanitarium and thought maybe they could try putting milk on the breakfast bars to soften it up. And it was a hit. All the patients enjoyed the breakfast food, especially one named C.W. Post.
C.W. who, according to doddsmemorials.com, allegedly stole the recipe and, after he left the hospital, created his own version of the granola. Grape Nuts (pun intended) quickly became a popular addition to Americans’ morning routine. He also created Postie Toasties and named his company, Postum, now known as Post. Through the years, the Post and Kellogg’s companies bitterly competed for the breakfast food market share. The most epic one being the Pop Tart battle.
Unfrosted, is mostly fiction, according to Netflix.com.
However, Majorie Post did exist, it did happen in Battle Creek Michigan, and they did compete to come up with the product itself. Oh, and another fun fact, Mar-a-Lago was built for Marjorie Post and her husband, E.F. Hutton.
If you have two hours to kill, check out Unfrosted. It’s Jerry Seinfeld’s version of the Pop-Tart battle. It has more stars in it than Pop-Tarts has flavors. And is more colorful than your last trip in the psychedelic mushroom field.
